2007 EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS!!!

COMPETITORS TOOK HOME OVER $137,000 IN CASH ALONE!

The results are in and all our hard work paid off BIG. In 2007 we are proud to announce that competitors took home cash prizes in excess of $137,000. These statistics are based on our core classes: Open, Senior & Youth Barrels. It’s thanks to all our generous sponsors and show hosts who provided over $48,775 total added money in 2007. Our show hosts received just short of $10,000 in retained funds for all their hard work! Across Ontario we watched just about 5,000 Barrel runs in 2007. Now that’s a lot of tub turning!!! For our competitors their efforts were rewarded with year end awards in excess of $20,000. Awards featured items like Saddles, Buckles, Jackets, Vests, Blankets, Halters and more.

Some other interesting facts from 2007:

Total number of Open barrel runs: 3854
Total Youth barrel runs: 865
Total Senior barrel runs: 260

These statistics are for Ontario only. Currently Ontario has just over 350 members. This summer we are pleased to announce our expansion into Quebec and Alberta. Welcome to Edesse Descouteux 1st Director for Quebec and Pam Jacob our 1st Director in Alberta. NBHA Canada is working to have all provinces set up by 2010. This will open up another exciting level of opportunity for competitors. Our goal is to eventually have a Canadian Championships every 3 or 5 years. So what does this mean to members? Here are your opportunities: 1. Run & compete in your district for year end awards. 2. Run, compete and qualify for invitational runs in your Provincial or Regional Championships. 3. Qualify for the Open, Senior or Youth World Championships. 4. Eventually Qualify for the Canadian Championships. 5. Opportunity for riders to compete internationally. Team Canada competes at the NBHA International Competition at the World Championships and the World Barrel Racing Championships, held in Italy for the next 3 years. It all depends on your goals and desires!!

Youth Update: As noted in our last newsletter we also banked over $2,400 in 2007 scholarship funds towards participant’s future education. In 2008 we will feature a special youth award. The Youth Achievement Award will go to a Youth who is involved in the scholarship program, who has demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, volunteered to help grow and promote our sport and who has been a positive role model to others around them. The winner will receive the following: $500 bonus to their scholarship account, Wild Card to the NBHA Youth World Championships, Complimentary Stall and Entry to the NBHA Worlds. Don’t forget our 2008 Youth mini clinic’s running May - September, keep a watch on our web site for dates. To enroll in our 2008 Scholarship program please contact Sue Collier at nbhacanada@yahoo.ca or contact your Director for more details. NBHA Canada is committed and focused on our Youth competitors. We thank Jodi Pendry for volunteering as Youth Advisor for both NBHAC and OBRA this show season. If you are interested in volunteering on a Youth committee this season please contact Kim Sabila 519-443-6838.

NBHA Canada strengthens commitment to Barrel Racers. Here is what you can expect this coming season: All three NBHA core classes will be mandatory for all approved NBHA Canada shows. Open, Senior and Youth Barrels. The minimum added money that you can expect is as follows: Open $300, Youth $100 and Senior $50. For all three classes if there are over 20 entries we will run each event with a 4D payout. When less than 20 entries are competing, the payout will be based on a 3D format. When less than 10 entries in an event the payout will be 2D. Keep in mind that points are always rewarded on a 4D basis regardless of number of entries. If a payout is different than our NBHA standard it will be published with details prior to entries.

These details provided above will help manage everyone’s expectations as well as improve consistency across Canada.

(MORE SHOW DATES COMING!!)

We are doing some changes & upgrades to our website so keep checking us out at www.nbhacanada@yahoo.ca. Thanks so much to Sue Collier and her assistant Mandy Flynn for their web efforts. On February 2nd your directors are meeting again to finalize our 2008 budget and details on our show season. Will keep you posted on new updates. Great things to look forward to this season! Hope to see you at Can Am.

It’s with a sad heart that I close off this newsletter by sending out our deepest sympathies to the Egerton family. On Saturday January 26, 2008 the horse world lost one of our greats, George Egerton. George has been very involved in the Quarter Horse race industry and we’ve certainly missed him on the barrel circuit. George had a huge heart and a great passion for Quarter Horses. Many of you who have been turning barrels for many years will remember George during the days of the Canadian National Exhibition and Quarterama. He could give us all a lesson on keeping a show running smoothly! George touched many of our lives and for those that had the good fortune of knowing George, treasure the memories.

Show Season Wrapping up for 2007!!
Entries reach all time high!

Competitors are embracing the year end pressure & hitting the highway to make the most of the last few shows of the year before finals. It’s a tight race for competitors qualifying for the Invitational Open, Senior and Youth classes at this years finals. 170 entries in the 4D, 30 in the Senior and over 50 in the Youth. Next issue of the Rider will feature highlights and show results from our 2007 finals.

Recently for District 1 it was back to Wallacetown fair grounds, the last speed show at Wallacetown goes back to Wayne Longfield on Skeeter, so at least 10 years or more. We appreciate the fairboard and all their volunteers for helping us bring back barrel racing to the fair. A great come back with $2,400 in added money. Debby sends her thanks to everyone for supporting the show and for a great day of barrel racing.

We still have several show dates available in most of the districts and are always looking for new show hosts. Please keep us in mind for your local club, or if you would like to consider hosting your own show please contact your director for follow up. 2008 planning is in the works now!

JERSEY WINNER LAYED UP:
It’s been a tough year for a few of our great equine partners. For those of you that don’t know, one of our top 1D horses Jersey Winner from District 2 had some bad luck recently. After a very successful show at London Fair, Jersey spent two weeks at the University of Guelph large animal hospital due to a spinal chord injury. He experienced some spinal chord trauma which they think was brought on from an old injury. They still don’t have a clear picture of the damage. In a few weeks he will be reassessed as they wait for inflammation to go down. He’s currently weight bearing but is still in a special sling to help him during recovery. Brian says he’s alert and happy, “he’s his normal old self”. The plan is to get him sound so he can enjoy a well deserved retirement. Some of his Major accomplishments are: Congress Novice Amateur Champion 2004. Multiple OBRA Sweepstakes Top 5 year end finalist and 1D OBRA Champion 2004 along with multiple Top 5 1D finalist. In the last 7 years he has won a lot of races with Brian and is a name well recognized on the NBHA & OBRA circuit. Brian wants to send his appreciation for the donations collected at Milton & Forest for Jersey’s veterinary expenses, every little bit helps. We wish Jersey Winner a speedy recovery and happy retirement; our thoughts and prayers are with you.

WORLD BARREL RACING NEWS:
NBHA World competitors will be heading down to Augusta Georgia around October 27th and 28th. We wish everyone a safe journey and a successful show for Canadians.

Friday at appox. 4:00 p.m. the show kicks off with a 4D Jackpot that is limited to 125 entries. Proceeds from this run will be donated to Canadian Breast Cancer.
